The Davis-Patteson Cottage is an eight-bedroom boarding home built in 1910 and was originally called the Tarheelia. The house is the oldest surviving cottage on the north end of the beach. The cottage is a vernacular style beach cottage built for Arnold Gates Davis (1848-1917), a naturalist and native of New York State . The cottage was purchased in 1945 by James S. Patteson (1897-1977), a cotton broker from Mecklenburg County , N.C.
